The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed a devastating explosion that occurred on Thursday, April 3, 2025, in the Mushin area of Lagos State, resulting in one fatality and three injuries. The injured have been hospitalized and are receiving medical attention.

Preliminary investigations by the Lagos State Police Command, as disclosed by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Public Relations Officer, indicate that the explosion was triggered by a scrap metal dealer’s inadvertent attempt to cut a military-grade grenade into smaller pieces, resulting in a fatal blast that claimed his life.

The Lagos State Police Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit sprang into action upon receiving the report, swiftly deploying experts to the scene. The area was quickly cordoned off, secured. This decisive action by the Lagos State Police Command’s EOD-CBRN Unit helped mitigate potential risks.

The remnant of one exploded grenade, and two (2) live (active) grenades were professionally and technically evacuated from the scene to the Base Headquarters of Police EOD-CBRN, Lagos, for safety.

The area surrounding the explosion site has been cordoned off to enable a comprehensive investigation into the incident’s circumstances and to implement necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future
