Senator Smart Adeyemi (APC/Kogi West) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to reconsider his position to address the current naira scarcity within the next seven days.
Adeyemi, the Chairman, Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, made the call in Abuja on Saturday while addressing newsmen.
President Buhari on Friday begged Nigerians to give him one week to resolve the issue of naira scarcity when he met with the All Progressives Congress governors.
However the senator bemoaned the current sufferings by the people which were becoming unbearable and pleaded with the President to act immediately to avoid further deaths among the people.
Adeyemi said:“I want to call on the President that 7 days is too long a period. The pains that Nigerians are experiencing is too much. “There is no room for anybody to want to run Nigeria into trouble. We are gradually getting over the problem of PMS scarcity, but this currency affects most of us. People need access to money. Do you know how people are suffering?
“Mr President, thanks for your concern, but seven days is a long time. It’s like a woman in a labour room, and you said she should continue labour for seven days.
“Mr President, not all women in the labour room will survive seven days. This problem is like a woman in the labour room, Mr President. This is how the situation is. Nigerians are suffering. The majority who are poor are languishing. Mr President, you have done your best whether anybody likes it or not. Apart from the insecurity that has blundered other achievements, Buhari, you have done your best”
“Three days is like one year for people to bear. I am saying this because we were elected, not appointed, so I have the responsibility to give the feedback of the pains of the people that elected us.
“Those elected are the direct contact to the people. In some instances people are paying N2500 to get N10,000 of the old notes, not even there notes.
“In this country there are artisans who live by their daily earnings. They can go out what they get in the day is what they use to manage their homes.
“These people are dying silently and I want to support all the positions taken by Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and the President should listen.
“We that are speaking out are the friends, we are his children who loves him so that this government should succeed and hand over on May 29th peacefully.
“We have contributed so much for the enthronement of democracy and some of us will not allow for democracy to be derailed in any way.
“This is a threat to peace and tranquility of the country and that is what is giving room for interpretation, and insinuations that some people around Buhari are behind but rightly so rightly wrong but there are reasons to believe,” he said
Fidelity Bank MD/CEO Sentenced To 6 Weeks Imprisonment.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank Plc, Nneka Chinwe Onyeali-Ikpe has been sentenced to six weeks imprisonment over disobedience of a garnishee order of court restraining the bank from allowing a judgement debtor access to his account.
This verdict was delivered by a Chief Magistrate Court Magistrate Lateef Owolabi at Ogba Magustrate Court in Lagos on Monday.
Sentenced alongside the bank boss was the bank secretary, Ezinwa Unuigboje.
He gave the sentence sequel to a garnishee order he gave on December 6, 2022 asking 16 banks not to allow a judgement debtor, Prince Enabulele Ozaze access to his bank accounts pending the payment of N2.8 million judgement debt in suit involving the sale of a Toyota Corolla car.
In the main suit, Magistrate Owolabi had given judgement on October 13, 2022 in favour of the plaintiff, Jibrin Ahmed who sued the defendant over the payment of N2.8 million he made to the defendant for the purchase of a Toyota Corolla car.
Magistrate Owolabi in the judgement said that the claim before the court is summons used in action for debt or liquidated money demand with or without interest.
According to him, liquidated demand is one ascertainable as a matter of arithmetic precision without further investigation.
Magistrate Owolabi said, “I have examined the whole process filed by the claimant and hold that the claimant is entitled to judgement not necessarily because the defendant is absent, but because the claimant has made a case worthy of being entitled to judgement. The totalities of evidence presented are relevant and reliable.”
The magistrate thereafter entered judgement against the defendant in the sum of N2.8 million which is due to the claimant over the transaction that took place in July 2022.
The claimant’s lawyer, Alayo Akanbi filed a garnishe proceeding before the court and attached 17 banks, and asked the court to stop the banks from allowing the defendant to draw money from his accounts with them pending the liquidation of the debt. The garnishe order was granted on December 6, 2022.
However, on January 25, 2023, the claimant, now judgement creditor deposed to an affidavit before the court where he showed that the garnishe order have been flouted by Fidelity bank.
He showed instances of how the judgement debtor had been withdrawing funds from his account to the extent that he had depleted the funds in his account with Fidelity bank.
He claimed that the judgement debtor has N3,165,759.05k in his account with Fidelity bank as at January 12, 2023 when the garnishe order was served on the bank.
By January 15, three days after service, the judgement debtor had withdrawn N725,547.80k from the account. The following day, January 16, 2023, another N251,305.90 was transferred out of the bank.
On January 17, the legal officer of the bank Obianuju Nwosu confirmed service on the bank as at December 22, 2022 and further apologised for the transactions on the account.
January 18, 2023, the court ordered that the Managing Director, and Company Secretary to appear in person before the court to explain why they should not be committed to prison for allowing the judgement debtor to dissipate the funds in his account after the service of the garnishe order nisi.
At today’s proceeding the Managing Director and Company were not in court as ordered. Lawyer to the judgement creditor told the court how the two had disobeyed the garnishe order of the court.
Magistrate Owolabi in his ruling sentenced the Managing Director and Company Secretary to six weeks imprisonment each.
He further ordered Lagos State Commissioner of Police and any officer under his command to arrest the bank staff, bring them to court for onward transfer to the court.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the suspension of promotion of eight Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General and 11 Deputy Commissioners of Police to the next rank of Commissioners due to their failure to appear before it for the mandatory promotion interview.
The Commission had sent invitations to the Officers to appear before it for the usual interaction to ascertain their suitability and capability for the new Offices.
PSC according to a statement, expressed surprise at their failure to honour the Invitation especially as the 2023 general elections are just days away.
The commission also approved the appointment of three Assistant Inspectors General of Police to the rank of Deputy Inspectors General of Police.
The approval of the appointments of the new DIGs has also ensured that the defined succession policy in the Nigeria Police is sustained.
The statement issued on Sunday by the Head, Press and Public Relations of PSC, Ikechukwu Ani said AIG Hafiz Mohammed Inuwa, the Force Secretary, will be replacing retired DIG Mustapha Dan- Daura for the North West slot.
DIG Dan-Daura retired on the 15th of January this year.
AIG Aji Ali Janga from North East will replace DIG Zanna Mohammed Ibrahim who retired on the 26th of November 2022, while AIG Adeleke Adeyinka Bode of North Central will replace DIG Sanusi Lemu who retired on the 31st of January this year.
Ani said, the new appointments were part of the decisions of the reconvened 18th Plenary Meeting of the Commission which held in Abuja on Thursday, 2nd and Friday 3rd February, 2023 and chaired by the Acting Chairman of PSC, Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi JSC rtd.
He said the commission also approved the promotion of 10 Assistant Commissioners of Police to the next rank of Deputy Commissioners; 17 Chief Superintendents of Police to Assistant Commissioners and 301 Superintendents of Police to Chief Superintendents.
Ani said 47 who skipped the position of Deputy Superintendents of Police from previous recommendations to the Commission were also promoted to Superintendents of Police while 665 Assistant Superintendents of Police were promoted to Deputy Superintendents of Police.
He said the recommendations for ACP Nwamanna Nelson, SP Iliyas Casmir and SP Alheri Mamman were also endorsed and the Officers promoted to their next ranks after they were absolved of any Pending Disciplinary Matter (PDM).
Justice Ogunbiyi charged the newly promoted Officers to give their best to the service of their nation especially now that Nigeria will be going to the polls to elect new leaders.
She congratulated and wished the Officers success in their new ranks.
INEC announces new dates for 2023 election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday announced new dates for the 2023 elections.
The National Chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu made this known at a news conference in Abuja.
According to him, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, February 25, 2023.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has vowed to take it in good faith if he loses the presidential election.
Atiku explained that he would not be the first loser; hence he would take his loss in good faith.
Speaking on BBC Pidgin on Tuesday, Atiku said: “I am not the first loser, neither am I going to be the last.”
Atiku also dismissed claims of corruption against him, stressing that he had been investigated and nothing was discovered.
“All what I know, all corrupt practices or corruption allegations against me have been investigated in this country more than anybody else and nothing was found against me. That audio has disclosed nothing new,” he said.
The former Vice President also said he wants to bequeath a better Nigeria to his children and the future generation of the country.

Former Speaker Yakubu Dogara says President Muhammadu Buhari’s endorsement of Bola Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate is a joke taken too far.
Buhari had during an APC campaign rally in Nasarawa on Saturday backed Tinubu for the nation’s top job, saying he will give his best for the country.
“I congratulate and assure you that God willing we are going to win through and through. As Tinubu said in his speech, I have known him for more than 20 years, and I will continue to campaign for Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“He is a committed Nigerian and I believe he will give all his best to Nigeria,” Buhari said, according to a statement by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu.
But Dogara took to his Twitter handle, describing the President’s action as a joke that is taken too far.
According to the former Speaker, he knew Buhari loves cracking jokes but he didn’t know it would escalate to the level of satire.
“I know that PMB loves to crack jokes but I didn’t know he would escalate it to the level of satire. Asiwaju’ll give his best to Nigeria, really? Fake certificates, fake parentage, golden triangle escapades, racketeering,” Dogara tweeted.
Last December, Dogara threw his weight behind the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.
