Police Warn Social Media Influencers Against Spreading False Information on Third-Party Insurance

The Nigeria Police Force has set the record straight, refuting claims made by social media influencers and activists that the police are using the Third-Party Insurance policy to make a profit. The police clarified that they are only responsible for enforcing the policy, not issuing it. Vehicle owners are required to obtain the mandatory insurance, which is a legal requirement in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that it doesn’t issue third-party insurance, contrary to some misconceptions. According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police are simply enforcing the law, not profiting from it. This means that vehicle owners are responsible for obtaining the mandatory insurance from authorized providers, not the police.

According to him, vehicle owners are responsible for obtaining the mandatory third-party insurance through their insurance providers. As of February 1, 2025, the police have begun enforcing this policy, aiming to boost road safety and safeguard the rights of accident victims.

The police are warning social media influencers and activists to refrain from spreading false information about insurance policies. To clarify, the police role is limited to enforcing the policy, not issuing insurance coverage. Sharing accurate information is crucial to avoid misleading the public. Spreading misconceptions can lead to non-compliance, resulting in potential legal consequences for motorists.
