CSP AKERELE LEADS THE CHARGE: PROMOTING SAFETY AND SERENITY THROUGH TRAFFIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL BEST PRACTICES

It was a Tuesday, 25th November, 2025, in Lagos, and the Safety Arena at Bolade, Oshodi was buzzing with stakeholders from all walks of life. They had gathered for a meeting with the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, to discuss ways to promote safety and serenity in the city.

The theme of the meeting was “Promoting Safety and Serenity through Traffic and Environmental Best Practices”.

In his speech, Akerele emphasized the importance of stakeholders’ understanding of the Lagos State Traffic and Environmental Reform Laws, which aim to achieve zero tolerance for traffic violations, environmental degradation, and other forms of lawlessness.

He highlighted the functions of the Lagos State Taskforce, including addressing poor sanitary conditions, arresting street traders, and prosecuting violators of road traffic laws. He noted that Lagos, as a mega city with a population of about 25 million people, faces enormous challenges of rapid urbanization, insecurity, poverty, environmental degradation, housing congestion, and unemployment, among others.

Addressing these challenges demands collective effort, strategic planning, and adherence to transport and environmental standards to make the city serene, inclusive, environmentally friendly, economically vibrant, and safe for all. The state has lost so much to traffic violations, the menace of Okada on highways, drug abuse, miscreants, one-way driving, and other criminal activities.

However, the administration led by Governor Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is committed to putting an end to these problems. CSP Akerele called on stakeholders to partner with the government in making Lagos a safer and more serene city. He urged everyone to report wrongdoing, illegalities, and criminal activities, and to support the government’s efforts to end traffic violations, Okada menace, and other forms of lawlessness.

“The expectations are simple: SPEAK OUT. REPORT WRONGDOING. REPORT ILLEGALITIES. REPORT YOUR NEIGHBOURS, FRIENDS, OR EVEN FAMILY MEMBERS WHEN NECESSARY,” he emphasized.

Speaking further, CSP Akerele reiterated the Taskforce’s commitment to sustaining best practices, as captured in the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda of the State Government. “We are dedicated to making Lagos a city where almost everything works,” he said, “and this is achievable when government and its people work hand-in-hand’.

He emphasized that the Taskforce will continue to engage in enlightenment, education, and public engagement, especially with stakeholders in the environmental and transport sectors. “Our workload will be significantly reduced if Lagosians imbibe the culture of obeying State laws, We will not relent in our efforts to ensure compliance with laws and regulations,” he assured, “and we will go the extra mile to ensure compliance with all laws, regulations, and codes governing both traffic and environmental activities in Lagos State”.

As CSP Akerele spoke, images of congested roads, littered streets, and chaotic markets flashed through the minds of the audience. They knew that something had to be done to address these issues. CSP Akerele outlined the functions of the Taskforce, including addressing poor sanitary conditions, arresting street traders, and prosecuting violators of road traffic laws.

As the meeting drew to a close, they knew that they had a role to play in promoting safety and serenity in their city.
