PSC Cracks Down on Police Misconduct, Dismisses Four Officers, Sanctions 31 Others

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal of four senior police officers over various acts of misconduct, while 10 others have been demoted as part of disciplinary measures aimed at reinforcing professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.

The decisions were reached during the Commission’s plenary meeting held at its Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, where several disciplinary cases involving senior officers were reviewed.
In a statement issued by the PSC’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Mr. Torty Njoku Kalu, the Commission disclosed that the four dismissed officers were found guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and actions considered unbecoming of public officers.
The Commission also ordered the reduction in rank of 10 senior officers. The affected officers include three Superintendents of Police (SPs) demoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), two Deputy Superintendents of Police reduced to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), and five Assistant Superintendents of Police demoted to the rank of Inspector.
In addition, the PSC approved the compulsory retirement of two officers in what it described as being in the public interest.
Other disciplinary actions included severe reprimands for 10 officers, reprimands for five officers, warning letters issued to three officers and a letter of advice served on one officer. Seven officers were, however, cleared of wrongdoing after investigations found no evidence to substantiate the allegations against them.
Reacting to the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Salihu Argungu, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to maintaining discipline and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
He stressed that the current leadership of the Commission would not tolerate misconduct by police personnel, adding that any officer found wanting would face appropriate sanctions. He also assured that officers who distinguish themselves through exemplary service would continue to receive recognition and rewards.
The Commission reiterated its resolve to strengthen accountability, promote ethical policing and enhance public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force through consistent enforcement of disciplinary standards.
